A BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF THE INSTITUTE OF TIBETAN LANGUAGE AND LITERTAURE
The course in Tibetan language and literature was one of the first courses offered by the Northwest University for Nationalities. Undergraduate students started studying. In 2003 it became the Institute of Tibetan language and literature. Since its establishment, it has contributed a great deal to government organizations, Tibetology organizations and Tibetan areas in general, having trained more than 4,600 qualified personnel. Currently, the Institute offers courses at 4 different levels: a 2-year higher education diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate (Masters and doctoral) degrees. The Masters degree in Tibetan language and literature was established in 1979 and it was the first degree the department has offered in the postgraduate level. At present it includes specializations in Tibetan language and literature, in translation and in ancient Tibetan. The PhD in Tibetan language and literature was established in 2003 and we started enrolling students in 2004. It includes specializations in Tibetan literature and Tibetan Buddhism and in ancient Tibetan. The Institute offers four different bachelor’s degrees: Tibetan language and literature, Tibetan language and literature with Tibetan-Chinese translation, Tibetan language and literature with modern secretarial studies and Tibetan-Chinese bilingual business management. Among the 45 personnel, there are 39 fulltime faculty, including 16 professors and 19 associate professors. There are more than 800 students here, from Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces as well as Tibetan Autonomous Region. Further more, the institute under guided CCP educations direction, ideological education main purpose, wins the “provincial best CCP” price. Development of existing subjects and establishment of new ones has been the main focus of the reform within the University, as it strives for excellence. Under the guidance of the administration, a lot of energy has been put into the development of new, more practical courses in the recent years. In 2003, the degree in Tibetan language and literature was granted the status of a key provincial degree. Most of the graduates are working in Tibetan areas and have made significant contributions to the development of socialism and unity of nationalities. The Institute does not only focus on teaching, but also on the scientific research. Since the 1950s many Tibetan experts have been trained here For example: Stadan Sarong, Wangxinan, Duankexing, Houshenzhen, Huangfengzhen, Chethar. Current Tibetan experts, Dorshi, Huakan, Kaori, Hewenxuan, Gasang Stadan. We also pay attention to scholarly communication and academic communication. Many conferences have been successfully held by the Institute, for example “The 1st Symposium on Tibetan Language Teaching Reform”, “Tibetan traditional culture and harmonics society”. The Institute places a great stress on the materials used in classes. Thus 95% of the these are originally developed by the Institute. Our faculty have published approximately 50 textbooks so far. For example, Poetry Theory, Wisdom From Compassion, Chinese-Tibetan Dictionary of Buddhism , China Tibetan Buddhism, etc. The overall development and creation of a good study atmosphere are considered as important as academic results. The Institute’s Tibetan Song and Dance Association promotes Tibetan culture and communication between different ethnic groups, thus contributing positively to the University’s cultural life. At the beginning of the new century, the Institute of Tibetan Language and Culture continues to strive for the excellence and progress both academically as well as administratively.
